Up for an early breakfast before we drive from Riverton  to the mighty Te Wae Wae Bay. The walk from Bluecliffs Beach follows the beach and coastal tracks. Fiordland crested penguins, Hector dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, and occasionally whales can be seen around the coast. Our first campsite is the historic Port Craig Schoolhouse

Approximate walking time: five hours

DAY 3: Port Craig Schoolhouse, Percy Burn Viaduct, Wairaurahiri River

Today we head east along an old logging tramway used in the 1920's to transport logs to the mill at Port Craig. We will cross the spectacular Percy Burn Viaduct, thought to be the highest remaining wooden viaduct in the southern hemisphere. Our destination for the night is the Wairaurahiri Hut just across from the Waitutu Forest. This magnificent forest features giant Rimu and Totara hundreds of years old.

Approximate walking time: five hours

DAY 4: Wairaurahiri River, Lake Hauroko, Riverton

Picture

This morning we are picked up by Paul from Wairaurahiri Wilderness Jet. Rock strewn rapids lead us up one of the steepest rivers in New Zealand to Lake Hauroko.
The lake is particularly special to the local Maori or iwi.  The remains of a Maori princess called the Princess of the Lake are said to rest in the cleft of a rock on Mary Island.

At Lake Hauroko we transit by road back to The Riverton Rock and the chance to reflect on the last four days with new found friends.

Approximate jet boating time: one and a half hours
