DAY 2: Riverton, Foveaux Strait, Mason Bay

From Riverton Harbour we head out  in to Foveaux Strait in a local fishing boat. Along the way we learn about this rugged area, passing Codfish Island, an important sanctuary for the Kakapo, a large flightless parrot. At Mason Bay we climb on board the boats dinghy for the beach landing.

The walk along this sweeping beach takes us to Mason Bay Hut where we set up camp. After dark we set out to try our luck at Kiwi spotting...

Approximate walking time: three hours

DAY 3: Mason Bay, Chocolate Swamp, Freshwater Landing

Today we walk to Freshwater Landing passing Island Hill Homestead, the first pastoral run constituted in 1879. Old farm machinery lies abandoned, testimony to an era past.

Scrub covered sand dunes, manuka and red tussock house many native birds, including the brown kiwi, red crowned parakeets, robins and tui's. We may well be joined by some of them along the way. We set camp alongside the Freshwater River.

Approximate walking time: four hours

DAY 4: Freshwater Landing, Milars Beach, Halfmoon Bay

At high tide we are picked up by water taxi and head down the winding Freshwater River to Milars Beach. Here we meet Jo with her sea kayaks. On our way back to Halfmoon Bay we check out some of the historic sites such as the Whalers Base and enjoy the coastal scenery. This evening we stay in Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Islands only town.

Approximate sea kayaking time: four hours

DAY 5: Halfmoon Bay, Bluff, Riverton

Boarding our ferry we head back to Bluff , a chance to visit Fred and Myrtle and their paua house and the completion of our journey, The Riverton Rock.
